What are the Causes of Sleep Enuresis?

Enuresis, or bedwetting, is the involuntary loss of urine during sleep. Many parents of children with enuresis feel that the condition is debilitating and have found it difficult to be effective in managing their child’s condition. Find out what you can do to help these children.

If you have a child who wet the bed, you may be wondering what is causing the problem. Some common causes of sleep bedwetting are:

  •  Deficiencies in certain key minerals or vitamins – A lack of iron, magnesium, and zinc can all lead to an increased risk of sleep enuresis. These minerals are important for the body's natural functions, including regulating the nervous system. If your child is deficient in any of these nutrients, it may be necessary to get them tested to see if they need to take supplements.

  • Neurological disorders – Conditions like cerebral palsy or epilepsy can cause children to wet the bed. This is because these diseases affect the nervous system and can disrupt normal bladder function. If your child has a neurological disorder, it may be necessary to see a doctor for treatment.
  • Enlarged prostate or other male reproductive organs – If a male child has an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia), it can increase their risk of developing sleep enuresis. Enlarged prostates can cause urine leaks at night, which can then lead to wetting the bed. Treatment options for enlarged prostates include surgery and medication.
  •  Psychological conditions – Children who wet the bed may have a mental health issue such as a learning disability, attention deficit disorder, depression or anxiety. If your child has an emotional or behavioral disorder, it's important to seek professional help and advice from a pediatrician in order to get treatment for sleep-related issues.
  • Sleep apnea – Many children who wet the bed also have sleep apnea , which is a serious sleep disorder that causes pauses in breathing during sleep. This can lead to dehydration because interrupted breathing doesn't allow much moisture to enter the lungs, which can then make it harder for your child to stay dry at night.
